The first time I heard "Come Back Lois" I had to dry my eyes and pick my jaw off the ground. I had come home from the recording studio to find Amanda sitting at our tiny kitchen table, holding my acoustic guitar and guarding a sheet of fresh lyrics. I asked the same thing I always ask: "Whattya got?" Out came this beautiful, heartbreaking, and enigmatic song - written from the perspective of a man. I asked to hear it again and it just knocked me out. And that's the way it went for the rest of the year. The songs kept coming, each one just as moving and mysterious. Blue Lagoon. If I Tried. Pluto. Before it Fades.
As she continued to play around the apartment, I found myself hitting the red button on an old Tascam 246 cassette recorder, with the idea of capturing the experience of hearing a song for the first time, played just for you, in a dimly lit kitchen in Echo Park.
More than anything else, these are songs of forgiveness, understanding, and compassion. I can't think of a more appropriate time for them to take flight.
